You can't pick and choose what you will support with taxes in town. It is every resident's responsibility to support public education and services. We are not paying enough to do the job properly. End of story. What a public education costs today is not what it cost 20, 30, 40 years ago. Except for the Vets, every school in the system has been the victim of budget cutting that severely affects upkeep and maintenance. I have been following the school department for 19 years. I have two children who went all through the Saugus Public School system. We have endured all sorts of things from outside the system that affect it day to day. Because of the citizen's stubborn refusal to recognize the costs of doing business for the town and schools today in the 21st century, our schools are suffering. All of the arguments against the override were and are totally bogus and completely unoriginal. People don't want to pay the actual price of town services. They think because they don't utilize this or that one in particular they shouldn't have to pay for it. They've said these same things at every override and debt exclusion this town has had in the last 20 years. Stop the madness! Anybody that has asked how we got here has surely not been paying attention the last few years. We are the town and we have failed Saugus and its children miserably.
