I think its great people want to save the world. I think its wonderful that tiny very affluent towns like Duxbury have decided to do a wonderful thing. I am also curious to see if refuse collection or illegal dumping has increased in other communities as a result of it. To think that people will automatically use less due to a $2 per week fee is ridiculous. If the town is taking less refuse, the remainder is definitely going somewhere else.
If you want to jack up the taxes to work on our waste issues so be it , just go do it and then simply take the trash as needed. This town can't run its current budget or operations effectively and now you want to add another layer of operational overhead and accounting to it????
I think if Saugus wants to save the world it should save itself first. We should be focused on keeping things simple. We should have someone with a little more spine dealing with our vendors on a annual basis working (squeezing) best deals with regard to waste management. I hear costs go up but I never ever hear of any vendor concessions. In the real world vendors are squeezed ALL THE TIME and if they decide not to concede the best thing about a free economy is that there is another vendro right behind them looking to do a heck of a lot more for you for less. Our town should be run like a lean and mean money saving machien not some community chest always prepared to cut checks to the highest bidder.
Idealist recycling programs our swell but we need a good core execution first. I am hoping that the Charter Commission can shed light on some of our most basic managerial downfalls. Again for those elders, single professionals or progessive people who do want to take that next green step, please do, but I don't see how our town can add on at the very least that extra organizational skill required to make it a success. If anyone things they can just watch our bumblers try to just discuss it the next time the issue arises.
