The Board of Appeals was recently criticized on this blog. I serve as an alternate and sat in on the decision in question. The applicant went along with the suggestions of the board and left the meeting with what all presumed was satisfaction with the decision, which was a compromise between all parties. That the business in question, Quiznos failed was certainly not the fault of the Board of Appeals nor the Board of Selectman. Many start ups do not make it for reasons that are not easy to figure out, to blame the town is an easy way out. It is outright ridiculous to imply that either Board wished anything but that the business was successful.       During my tenure of over several years as an alternate I have observed or participated in hundreds of decisions. The Board of Appeals looks out for the best interests of the town. During that time only a very small number of applicants have been denied. Often the case is that a business or homeowner will work with the Board members to come to a conclusion that is agreeable to all parties.
In conclusion, a few members of this Board have served for a considerable amount of time. Their experience and knowledge is evident. My position as an alternate has given me the opportunity to observe and learn from these experienced and knowledgeable individuals. The author of the prior blog who also served as an alternate, for a short period of time, should of taken the time to observe and learn and in time his chance to serve as mine will might have come down the road. Instead the criticism reeks of petty jealousness by someone unwilling to spend the time to gain the qualifications, and experience necessary to serve on the Board.

Sincerely, Tom Traverse
