I don't quite know whether this fits here, but I was encouraged to read Thomas Wolfe's OF TIME AND THE RIVER (when I was 17) by Tom Sheehan, who I'd met while I worked the summers of 1958-9 at Raytheon in North Andover. I lived just over the bridge into West Lynn (on Tower Hill, at 48 Echo Grove Ave.) so I crossed the bridge and read it at the little East Saugus branch library where the librarian had given me a complimentary card, even tho I didn't actually live in Saugus!
